Think Safe Drink Safe Card scheme Join now
The TSDS Card scheme aims to help licensees to fulfil the licensing objectives by promoting a responsible drinking environment. We give you point of sale material for you to use with responsible drinks promotions / TSDS card offers and guarantee your venue free publicity through the dedicated website
- By becoming a participating venue, you are agreeing to provide TSDS cardholders with promotional offers or discounts
- These promotional offers or discounts are agreed by each individual venue
- On joining the scheme, we will ask you to provide details of your promotions so that they can be advertised within the directory
- TSDS offers/promotions will be provided to customers on production of a TSDS card
- Promotions for TSDS cardholders do not have to be limited to alcohol-free drinks. The only requirement is that TSDS offers support responsible drinking / safer nights out
Responsible Alcohol Service: Helpful Advice for Staff
NHS Manchester have produced a free guide for anyone who has been authorised to sell or supply alcohol. The Responsible Alcohol Service guide (PDF) is designed for people working in pubs, bars, clubs, off-licences and supermarkets and focuses on under age sales and drunkenness as two of the many factors that challenge the four licensing objectives. Operators within Manchester* can order bulk supplies of the glossy booklets for free, simply fill in an order form or email Elizabeth.burns@manchester.nhs.uk
* Within the geographical boundaries of Manchester City Council
Responsible server training is a major feature within Manchester’s local licensing policy (Manchester City Council Licensing Policy 2008-2011), as well as the Social Responsibility Standards for the Production and Sale of Alcoholic Drinks in the UK (2005). Some of the benefits of server training include:
- Staff have a better understanding of the product they sell and their job skills are improved.
- Customers are encouraged to drink responsible
- Customers attract other customers like themselves and they come back; discouraging drinking styles that cause problems
- Reduction in employees’ turnover to the benefit of both the employees and employers
Preventing and Managing Drunkenness Booster Training
Thank you to everyone who expressed an interest earlier this year in the new ‘Preventing and Managing Drunkenness’ half day training workshops (facilitated by Liz Burns, NHS Manchester, and Inspector Ron Orr, Greater Manchester Police).
After an overwhelming response, we trained over 120 individual bar servers, bar supervisors and bar managers from bars, clubs, pubs and private members clubs across the city (originally funded for 80 places). Participants were trained with a checklist for recognising signs of intoxication as well as refusals pads for behind the bar. With ongoing interest and requests for further training, we are currently exploring options as how to take this training forward.
