Man banned from Gay Village
22 April 2010
A man has been banned from the Gay Village area of Manchester after threatening a female member of the door staff at Licensed premises in Canal Street.
39 year old Robert Joseph Smith from Woden Street in Salford was already banned from a number of bars and clubs in the area because of threatening and intimidating behaviour.
On Monday April 12 Manchester City Magistrates Court granted a 3 year ASBO which bans him from all licensed premises in the area and stops him from entering the Village at all between the hours of 6pm and 6am.
Manchester City Council secured the ASBO following complaints from a number of licensees about Smith's behaviour.
Manchester City Council's head of crime and disorder, Maureen Noble said: "The city council will not shy away from using the powers it has to curb this type of behaviour. The Gay Village will be a better place to work and socialise in because of the restrictions imposed on Mr Smith under this ASBO."
Neighbourhood inspector, Jo Marshall said: "This man has behaved as if he owns the area - smoking in pubs, threatening staff and customers and generally making a nuisance of himself. Customers have a right to visit the area without feeling intimidated and staff to work without being threatened and abused."
